African painting number 9 en wanted something really different this time. I opted for a thick (museum thickness) square canvas 12x12", prepared a circle with black gesso and also some branches and foliage (READ my article about this!!). After drying, some liquid clear on the canvas and then a careful mix of 70% Alazarin crimson and 30% Indian yellow (both transparent! See my article!) for the background. On purpose, the top more dark then the bottom. Animal and smaller branches were done with pure Ivory black.
The leopard itself was not easy at all but that was due to the smaller silhouette on a small size canvas. I hope everybody can recognize a leopard in it? I just posted an article together with this painting, explaining the method I use for painting these silhouettes. Please enjoy Africa and till next one!!
Thanks for sharing the article! Thanks for mentioning about bird. I saw episode with a little squirrel on the brunch of the big tree and was wondering if there were more with little animals! I'll watch that episode for sure!
This is very inspiring mood in this panting to go and paint more. I am so happy i saw it this morning before going for the portrait challenge today!
Thank you so very much for sharing this beauty with us!
Dear Sunnylady, always a pleasure to make your day! The promised rhino has to wait for another African painting.
You mention a little squirrel in an episode? Which one would that be? I like to add this info to my article to be complete, thanks for updating me on that!
Have a great week and a successful challenge!
Your African series are really wonderful.
I like them!
Well, the last two (leopard and elephant) are my best so far. Many more to come still, I try to paint 2 or 3 every month of those African based paintings. Till next one!
I will find and share with you what episode that was. There was a huge tree and green background.
Dear Sunnylady, yepp, got it, it's named 'Forest edge', season 23, episode 2. I will add it to my article. MANY THANKS for your sharp eye and observation!!!
Regarding first portrait ever having live person sitting in front of you is a Disaster. Obviously I have not finished and need to buy retouch varnish to continue on Saturday. I was so frustrated at the end as I did not succeed at all. Especially when model came with advices on how she looked I became mad. Surely now after I finish that portrait I am not painting people anymore.
You found that episode super fast!
Oh, you tried a live model? Waw, that must've been quite a task. Maybe you should try once from a picture or so? I sent Felix a portrait last week and painted it from a comics artist on the internet. Portraits are VERY difficult for me, it's just not my thing. My daughter on the other hand can do portraits like nothing, but never in oil.
I knew that portraits are not my thing and never was even when I just did the photo. Maximum would be family members. I tried to get out of my comfort zone with the portrait and I know I will push to finish.
Thank you Voy for allowing us to continue the trip to Africa! Your work on the silhouettes is remarkable and I will keep on reading more of your articles!
You know, this is so hardwarming, thanks Romain, you are a true artist AND a great person!!
